UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN WE'VE BEEN UNABLE TO SCHEDULE A SITE VISIT. HE WANTS ME TO FOLLOW UP WITH HIM RIGHT BEFORE THE WEEK OF THANKSGIVING AND I DID GIVE HIM THE GPS COORDINATES FOR THE TWO CEMETERIES THAT WE DO NOT HAVE REGISTERED WITH THE STATE OF FLORIDA AND HE STILL HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE THEM. HE SAYS ONE'S IN THE FOREST AND ONE'S IN A FIELD. SO WE HAVEN'T DETERMINED IF THERE'S ACTUALLY A CEMETERY THERE. ONE THING I DIDN'T PUT ON MY LIST WAS THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF WORK AT THE SOLDER CEMETERY IN ORANGE PARK AND WE HAD A YOUTH GROUP THAT CAME OUT LAST SUNDAY FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND DID SOME MAINTENANCE WORK AND OH, MY GOSH, IT WAS A HUGE GROUP, HUGE, AND THEY DID A TERRIFIC JOB CLEANING UP A BUNCH OF STUFF. WE WERE VERY PLEASED TO HAVE THEM OUT THERE. SO WE ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF VOLUNTEERS THAT WE HAD COME OUT AND THEY'RE WILLING TO COME OUT AGAIN. WE'RE ALSO STARTING TO WORK ON MCKENDRE HAMMOCK CEMETERY ACROSS FROM DOCTORS INLET SCHOOL. IT IS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. I HAD BEEN TOLD EVEN THOUGH IT'S REGISTERED WITH THE STATE THAT IT HAD BEEN ABANDONED AND WAS WAY OVERGROWN. THE FOLKS THAT OWN THE PROPERTY HAVE PASSED AWAY AND THEIR DAUGHTER HAS NOW TAKEN OWNERSHIP OF THE PROPERTY.

SHE HAS GIVEN US PERMISSION. SHE'S EXTREMELY EXCITED THAT WE'RE INTERESTED IN RESTORING THE CEMETERY. I'VE ALSO REACHED OUT TO THE BOY SCOUTS AND A BOY SCOUT FROM TROOP 482 IN FLEMING ISLAND MET US OUT THERE AND HE WANTS TO DO THE RESTORATION OF THAT CEMETERY AS HIS EAGLE PROJECT, WHICH WE'RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT. WE WILL BE KIND OF OVERSEEING THE PROJECT AS FAR AS THAT GOES, BUT THE BOYS WILL ACTUALLY BE DOING THE RESTORATION WORK. IN THE MEANTIME WE ARE DOING RESEARCH OF THE BURIALS AND THE HISTORY BEHIND THE CEMETERY, WHICH IS RATHER CHALLENGING BECAUSE A LOT OF THE GRAVES IN THERE HAVE NO DATES. SOME OF THEM DON'T EVEN HAVE NAMES, BUT I'VE KIND OF GONE THROUGH QUITE A BIT OF THEM. A LOT OF THEM ARE BURRS FAMILY, WILFORDS, SOME FOUNTAINS. THERE ARE TWO MILITARY STONES IN THERE. ONE WE ACTUALLY FOUND THE STONE. THE OTHER ONE WE HAVE NOT, BUT THE WPA SAYS SAY THAT THEY HAVE PUT

THAT MILITARY STONE OUT THERE AT MCKENDRE. SO I'M SURE ONCE HE STARTS DOING HIS RESTORATION WORK, WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIND IT. SO I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO LOCATE THE CEMETERY OFF OF SPRINGBANK ROAD, WHICH IS GARNER LIGE. I'VE TALKED TO ELIZABETH PEEPLES WHO ACTUALLY LIVES ON SPRINGBANK AND SHE'S HELPING US DETERMINE WHO THE CURRENT PROPERTY OWNER IS SO THAT WE CAN DO A SITE VISIT AND THEN ADD IT TO THE FLORIDA STATE MASTER FILE. WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY LUCK WITH THE TAYLORS LANDING THAT'S OFF OLD HARD ROAD.
