AFTER THE WITHDRAW ON MARCH 28TH , SAIGON FELL ON APRIL 30TH. APRIL 30TH THIS YEAR WILL MARK 50 YEARS FOR US THAT WE LOST OUR FREEDOM. SO, WITH THAT BEING SAID , AFTER WE LOST THE WAR, THE COMMUNISTS TOOK OVER AND TOOK ALL OF THE SOLDIERS, THE VIETNAMESE SOLDIERS IN JAIL, AND THEY PUT THEM IN JAIL , AND OUR FATHER, ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE OTHER SOLDIERS, WAS PUT IN JAIL. AND THEY KEPT HIM THERE FOR 3 1/2 YEARS. SO, THEY FINALLY RELEASED HIM. THEY DID NOT ALLOW HIM TO GET A REGULAR JOB. HE COULD NOT BE CLOSE TO A COMPUTER. HE CANNOT GET AN OFFICE JOB, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS A TEACHER. AND THE CHILDREN OF THOSE SOLDIERS WERE BLACKLISTED. WE COULD NOT GO TO HIGH EDUCATION , AND COULD NOT GET ANY IMPORTANT JOBS. SO, AND SEARCH FOR FREEDOM, MY FATHER ESCAPED VIETNAM ON FOOT IN 1986. HE ESCAPED TO CAMBODIA, AND THEN 16 HOURS ON A BOAT, A FISHING BOAT, TO GO THROUGH THAILAND . THERE, HE TOOK REFUGE IN THAILAND , AND WAITED FOR THE REFUGEE CAMP TO OPEN UP . THEN HE GOT SPONSORED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT , BECAUSE HE HAD SERVED WITH THE VIETNAM VETS . FOR SIX YEARS, HE WORKED AND SAVED MONEY AND SPONSORED THE FAMILY, THE THREE OF US AND MY MOM , TO COME HERE. SO, WE LANDED IN JACKSONVILLE IN 1993. THAT IS MY SHORT VERSION OF MY STORY OF HOW WE CAME TO AMERICA. THANK YOU. BUT THE REASON WE ARE HERE IS BECAUSE I WANT TO HONOR MY LATE FATHER. HE PASSED AWAY 12 YEARS AGO . BUT WHEN WE TALK AND GOT TO KNOW AND HOW WE FOUND OUT THAT THE VIETNAM VETERANS WERE AFRAID, MANY OF THEM WERE AFRAID TO APPROACH THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE, BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT WE HATED YOU GUYS, BECAUSE YOU LEFT US , BUT THAT IS FAR FROM THE TRUTH. WE LOVE YOU. WE REALLY RESPECT YOU AND APPRECIATED YOU. YOU DID EVERYTHING YOU COULD TO HELP US, AND YOU HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO LEAVE.
